Coffee Vending Machines in the Econonomic Downturn
It's a sad fact that when a company is facing financial stress, the first thing to be cut is R&D. Researchers and scientists add no value? Innovation and new or better products and services add no value? Well that's a lot of ballony isn't it?. Of course they add value , but only if they are able to hit on the next big thing or give the consumer what they want.
So are companies going to cut back on staff benefits like coffee? Only those who figure that their staff don't matter. It may be less apparent to staff that they are mere numbers in a payroll programme if these companies simply stopped stocking the rest-room with toilet rolls! After all, this is one serious consumable expense! Toilet rolls that is!
No, cutting the free issue coffee will not send the right message. Instead, companies should be looking to cut the costs of supplying coffee. They could move to a cheaper brand, negotiate better volume discounts or ask staff to self regulate consumption because the company faces a financial crisis. Heck, we're all reasonable people!
Better, get a coffee vending machine. Think about it. Each cup of coffee is pre-measured and the expense of an extra gram of coffee per cup is avoided. Then there is the milk issue. Fresh milk is expensive but the new powdered milk formulations are both tasty and matched to vending machine coffee. Good blends give a serious cappuccino froth! On powdered milk, there is no wastage either as it will go sour. This is a major source of wastage!
Then of course it is sad but true that when the economy softens and life gets tough at home too, staff may be tempted to...er...borrow coffee, tea and sugar. Of course, only to drink when working at home on company issues...Jokes aside, this is real and can eat into your coffee budget.
The coffee vending machine can avoid all the above. It distributes pre-weighed portions and keeps all ingredients locked away. Get a coffee sure, but not the raw ingredients! Using a good powfered milk not only avoids the fresh milk issue, but it can also allow you to use a cheaper coffee without any noticeable taste changes.
The reliability of the machines will give you peace of mind too and I'd add that a sink full of cups is a lot cheaper to clean than the cost of the same number of disposable cups...so go the porcelain route.
Who knows, the poor folk in the R&D lab may not only get to keep their jobs, but the rest of the company may yet get to keep the free coffee!
