Coffee Machines and Water Filters
Do you really need to use a water filter with your office coffee vending machine or domestic coffee machine? Now and then a customer will ask us this question, and unlike many other things in life (like will it be that great Indonesian/Guatemala blend for breakfast or that Ethiopian Yirgacheffe you got last week?), the answer is firm, definite, non-negotiable, absolute and given! (...get the point?) Yes. Yes. Yes.
The little bean spends it's life growing in special parts of the world and then effectively gives it's life for you - so you need to do your best to treat it well and ensure that you don't taint it with the chemicals in the water. Secondly, not many will invest in a rare gold coin only to take a hammer to dent it....so why buy a great coffee machine and damage its boiler with chemical compounds like calcium?
So yes, water filters perform various functions. First, they remove the chlorine, heavy metals like lead, copper and others like aluminium. In fact, the Claris water filters we use in our domestic range can eliminate over 85% of the chlorine and over 80% of the heavy metals!
Second, they remove the calcifying compounds and water leaves the boiler in the condition it needs to be - clean! Taste profiles remain consistent and you'll get to the correct temperature faster too. The other advantage is that you will not have to decalcify with potent chemical flushes. I can notice, even after five or six flushes with water and coffee, that these chemicals leave taints in my coffee. So it is a job I detest and I use only the best filters to avoid this problem.
Third, most good filters will help filter out bacteria and cysts. Our water is good in South Africa, but knowing that there is an added level of protection makes me a lot happier.
